VEYM Platform
The web platform for the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement: training camp search, chapter pages and a digital magazine.

Overview
The VEYM IT Team is a small group that uses software to support the movement's mission and serve its youth.
The site is for youth members, youth leaders and anyone who wants to learn more about VEYM. People use it to find events and training camps, and to reach resources that were hard to find online before. The movement has about 150 chapters across the US.
I have been part of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement since I was a kid, and I am now a youth leader. I joined the IT team to use my day-job skills for the community that raised me.
I help develop the Next.js platform that runs the movement's youth programs across the US. It handles resources and staff coordination. I work on the frontend and on the Directus CMS, which keeps content separate from the code.
How I built it
The site is written in TypeScript with Next.js and ChakraUI. Directus holds the content for chapters and camps. I set up the collections and manage the data. It replaces the 2018 version of the site, which was built with Gatsby and Reactstrap.
I worked on three pages: the HTL Magazine page, the training camp search, and the chapter pages.
What I learned
This was my first real TypeScript codebase. Its strictness changed how I write code everywhere else.
I learned Next.js and Directus on the job. Some weeks it feels like a second job after my day job, but I enjoy it. It also leaves room for backend and cloud work later.
